Box Elder Bugs

• WHAT YOU SEE

A cluster of black bugs with red or orange markings on the sunny side of the house, usually a window or a south-facing wall, showing up like clockwork every October. Sometimes there are a handful, sometimes there are a couple hundred, all sitting still in the sun. Indoors, they turn up on a windowsill or crawling across the living room in slow motion, more of a nuisance than anything that bites or stings.

• WHAT WE SEE

Box elder bugs aren't trying to live in your house, they're trying to survive winter in it, and they pick the warmest, sunniest wall they can find to gather on before the cold sets in. The window is where you notice them; the wall around it, especially any gap at the frame or the siding, is where they're actually getting in. Once they're inside a wall void, most of them stay there through winter rather than coming out into the living room, which is why the spring reappearance can look like a second infestation. They're harmless, no bite, no sting, no damage to the structure, which is part of why they're easy to ignore until there are a lot of them.

• HOW WE FIX IT

Timing matters most here: exterior treatment on the sunny walls in early fall, before they mass and move in, does more than anything applied after the fact. We seal the gaps at the window frames and siding they're using to cross over. If they've already gotten in, vacuuming is the right move, not spraying, since dead box elder bugs in a wall void just become food for the next pest to find. Interior spot treatment is available on request and free between visits if the population is heavy.

• WHEN THEY SHOW UP

Late summer into fall, specifically the first real cold snap in September or October, is when box elder bugs mass and move toward the house. They reappear in spring as the wall voids warm back up and the survivors head back outside. The living room and any south or west-facing wall are where they show up most; the eaves are part of the same sunny-wall pattern.

Box elder bugs and their beetle cousins are not living in your house. They are trying to sleep through winter in it, and they pick the sunny wall in September.
